Pottery road: first painting completed - tour to hanoi

In late May 2008, the first 100sq.m of pottery painting in the Pottery Road project was finished. The ugly, black concrete wall on Yen Phu road was refreshed with a new “coat” of bright pottery patterns.
The builders of “pottery road”

Pottery Road is a project by artist Nguyen Thu Thuy, who suggested making the Red River banks beautiful with colourful pieces of ceramic. The project won the special prize for unique and practical idea in the “Beautifying Hanoi” contest and a special prize by the Ambassador of Panama to Vietnam

The first 100sq.m of the Pottery Road began to be made in early January 2008. However, Thuy and her Vietnamese and international co-workers began working hard one year prior at Bat Trang pottery village to make pottery bricks.

At the camp in Bat Trang village, Thuy, Joel Bennet and Jon Pounds from the US, Dominique De Miscaut from France and many others from Vietnam contributed great ideas for this project.

The 100sq.m pottery painting on Yen Phu dike, Hanoi has six pieces depicting Vietnamese history from the Phung Nguyen, Dong Son civilisations to the Ly-Tran-Le-Nguyen dynasties. Typical images include hac (a legendary bird), pelicans, deer, houses on stills, Lac-Viet people, and depictions of pottery products made in the Ly and Tran dynasties, folk sculptural works from the 17th-19th centuries unearthed in the Thang Long ancient citadel archaeology site.

The Pottery Road Project will be implemented on the concrete dike running along Thanh Nien, Au Co, Nghi Tam, Tran Nhat Duat, Tran Quang Khai, Tran Khanh Du road, Chuong Duong Bridge, pillars under Long Bien Bridge, and Long Bien Market. Many things will be shown in these pottery paintings, including pottery paintings by artists throughout the country, children’s paintings, and international artists’ paintings. A great pottery painting will be made at Chuong Duong Bridge with dragons of the Ly Dynasty and the letters “Thang Long-Hanoi 1,000 years (2010-2010)”.

Painter Morten Espersen from Denmark was surprised when he saw the first 100sq.m of pottery painting. He suggested designing a pottery painting about the friendship between Vietnam and Denmark.

Meanwhile, France’s Dominique De Miscault is working on a model of small islands in Ha long bay with a total length of around 50m.

The Pottery Road project is scheduled to finish in the fall of 2010. At that time, the whole Red River dike passing Hanoi will be beautified by pottery paintings. This is a great gift to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Hanoi capital.
