This summer, young people will have the opportunity to discover their creative abilities as well as skills in a textile class at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. The class will be held from June 15 to August 10, 2008 in the children's discovery room. This is the fourth year the museum has organized the course.
Students will learn how to make funny paper dolls and sew traditional doll's clothes using Hmong bee-wax embroidery art and Thai ikat-dye patterned fabric. They will also make a con toy of the Tay and the Thai which they will play with at the museum's outdoor campus.
Other hand-made products taught include fabric pencil cases, bags and romantic pillow covers. These products will be displayed at the museum.
The museum is also offering a weaving class every Saturday and Sunday from June 14 to August 17. Participating students will learn the history of weaving and techniques of weaving several motifs and bamboo objects used in daily life such as bags, fans, hats, as well as how to preserve tools made of bamboo wood in their houses. They will also learn how to weave decorated animals on the ritual pole of the Thai, and how to braid deer, rabbits, fish, grasshoppers and dragonflies from palm leaves.
Many other educational activities will be free for students in the courses, such as water puppet performances, and exploring the culture of ethnic groups in Vietnam through indoor and outdoor displays.
Guests should register before June 13.
