La Pagoda in Hcm City’s Go Vap District features an evergreen bodhi tree that never needs watering. That’s because it was made of cement and steel by a young sculptor named Tru Cong Vu.
The boundary between the real and unreal is unclear to the pagoda’s many worshippers. Few seem to express any doubts over the tree’s veracity as Vu took great paints in applying only the most accurately coloured paints.
Vu took six months finding and shaping the tree’s vitality and soul out of a pile of cement and steel.
The Venerable Thich Nhuan Tam, head of La Pagoda, noted that visitors are often surprised when they find out the tree is in fact man-made. The birds and insects that make their home in the sculpture don’t seem to mind either.
