Muong ethnic gongs to be performed in Hanoi ancient quarter

With the hope of introducing the traditional culture of Muong ethnic minority group to people and tourists, the Vietnam Center for Music Art Development is staging gong performances of Muong people in front of Hanoi’s Dong Xuan market at night during weekends.
Muong gong is a specific kind of art associated with the Muong ethnic minority in northern mountainous provinces, especially northeastern Vietnam A set of Muong gongs include 12 gongs, divided into three types. These 12 gongs have different sizes.

During a field trip to Muong areas in the northern mountainous province of Hoa binh in 2007, the center found a close relationship between Muong and Kinh cultures. There are several similarities in the languages of Muong and Kinh, especially languages used by ancestors, in both semantics and pronunciation. The three types of gongs also show the sound division.
