Just follow the mosaic dike road - Ha Noi Ceramic Road

An exhibition currently in the capital’s Ly Thai To Square gives viewers a sneak peak of images that will become part of the next section of ceramic mosaics to beautify the dike road along the Hong (Red) River.
The exhibition, on display until next Sunday, is a part of the Ceramic Road project helping Ha noi celebrate its 1,000th birthday in 2010. The project started in January and has already transformed a 1.5km section of road.

Featured in the exhibition are the 20 ceramic mosaics specially made for Ha Noi by Vietnamese and international artists that will become part of the road art. There will also be replicas of ancient ceramic products from traditional villages where the first Vietnamese ceramic products were made such as Chu Dau, Bat Trang, Phu Lang and Huong Canh. In addition to ceramic art, there will also be 60 mural works by artists from the US, Italy and Spain on display.

A workshop is being held today for those interested in learning about the works on the dike road, along with an introduction to mural arts which are commonly part of public works projects in cities of the US and Europe.

Artists will share stories about working with local communities on art projects and will present images of various works of art including murals, mosaics, sculptures, benches and landscape designs. The workshop is being held at the Goethe Institute at 36 Nguyen Thai Hoc Ha Noi from 9am.

The Ceramic Road project to transform Ha Noi’s urban streets was initiated by painter and journalist Nguyen Thu Thuy.

Inspired by public mosaic murals on streets in cities of the US, Italy, Germany, Denmark and Greece when she visited them, Thuy decided to call for joint efforts from municipal officials, international organisations and other artists to make Ha Noi more beautiful.

The project was approved and many local and international artists have participated already in the transformation of the section of road beginning from the roundabout in Yen Phu Street. As planned, another section of 1km is expected to be completed with ceramic mosaics by 2010.

The total cost for the project is estimated at US$1.8 million. However, Thuy said she has so far mobilised only about $500,000.

"This is a wonderful chance for Ha Noi to have an artistic work to commemorate our 1,000- year- old city, and it will remain a long-term cultural hallmark of our age which will attract people to the capital for its artistic landscape. This project also educates Hanoians in terms of culture and life through aesthetic visions," said Le Huy Tiep, president of the Central Art Council – Viet nam Arts Association.
