Beauties Charm In Ao dai
The 80 Miss Universe hopefuls in town have, by all accounts, been floored by the beauty of the ao dai, the flowing traditional Vietnamese tunic.
Locals, on the other hand, were proud to see the ladies sashay on stage wearing their traditional costume at the Hoa binh Theater in Ho chi minh city on June 24.
Performing in an ao dai is not very easy, especially for non-Vietnamese. It requires a certain figure, graceful carriage, and deliberate gestures. Its beauty could be marred by walking quickly or even some gaits.
But many of contestants seemed fetching in the dress, especially the girls from Brazil, France, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Montenegro, Norway, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela, Thailand, Kazakhstan, India, and Egypt. They even danced charmingly.
Admittedly, some of the others appeared uncomfortable in the long tunic.
The 80 contestants were placed in four groups and wore from collections themed “Vietnamese Ao Dai”, “The Season of Beauty”, “The Western and Asian Portrait”, and “Convergence of Quintessence”.
Each of the themes was created by hotshot designers Si Hoang, Lien Huong, Vo Viet Chung and Thuan Viet, and featured an impressive combination of modern designs and traditional flowery patterns.
The stage was decorated with paintings describing the beauty of the ao dai.
Miss Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela, won the “Charming Ao Dai” title. The 22-year-old won the hearts of the audience with her stunning beauty, grace, and friendly smile.
Last year’s Miss Universe, Riyo Mori of Japan, said: “Viet Nam is one of the favorite places I have visited around the world. I got three ao dai’s and I’ll wear them at important events to promote the costume.”
